Metadata can change playback behaviour without changing the media streams
An MKV container can describe display dimensions and aspect ratio, track languages, which audio or subtitle track is the default, 3D layout and other properties used by players and media libraries. Incorrect metadata can make a valid file display or select tracks in an unintended way.
Changing supported container or track-header metadata is different from transcoding. MKV Batch Manager uses MKVToolNix tools to update supported properties without re-encoding the video or audio streams.
Scan: understand the originals
Scan establishes the starting point before any edit. It collects relevant file, display, video, audio, subtitle, language, default-track and 3D information so mixed or unexpected source files can be seen rather than assumed to be uniform.
This matters in batch work: a setting that is correct for eleven files may be wrong for the twelfth. Search, selection and configurable columns help narrow the intended scope.
Preview: see the destination values before writing
Preview calculates the planned metadata state without applying it. Colour-coded cells show unchanged and changed values, while written Changes, Warnings and Status fields preserve meaning without relying on colour alone.
This creates a deliberate review point between an instruction and a file modification. You can deselect exceptions, refine settings or cancel the plan before any selected file is written.
Apply: controlled execution with evidence
Apply processes the reviewed selection and reports per-file progress, warnings, failures and verification feedback. The activity log records the sequence, and the most recent completed batch can retain captured rollback state for Undo Last Apply.
Undo is a recovery aid for the latest captured transaction, not a substitute for independent backups. Power failure, storage faults, external file changes and unsupported edits still make backups the responsible choice.
Where MKV Batch Manager has an advantage
- One interface carries the same inspect → plan → review → apply sequence across many selected files.
- Original and planned metadata appear together instead of being split across command output and handwritten scripts.
- Independent workspaces preserve different folders and editing intentions without resetting one shared form.
- Queues support reviewed multi-job execution; detached previews and logs support closer inspection and export.
- No media re-encoding avoids the time and generational quality loss of transcoding when only supported metadata needs correction.
COMPARISON
Choose the tool that matches the change
| Approach | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| mkvpropedit command line | Precise scripted edits when selectors and properties are already understood | The operator must build scope, preview, exception handling and reporting |
| Single-file header editor | Occasional visual edits to one file | Repetitive for a series or archive and easier to apply inconsistently |
| MKV Batch Manager | Reviewable, repeated metadata changes across selected files | Requires MKVToolNix and supports the metadata operations exposed by the application |
| Remuxing or transcoding tool | Track restructuring, codec conversion or changes beyond editable metadata | Creates new media/container output and may require much more time and storage |
